The Pacific Nutrition Expert Group Workshop: 31 Jan – 02 Feb

The Pacific Food Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDG) were developed by SPC in 2000 in close collaborations with Pacific Nutritionist to promote healthy eating in the Pacific. Most countries have adopted these regional guidelines and adapted and translated these in their own languages to promote healthy eating messages to suit their specific national context.

However, the FBDG was developed only for the healthy adult population and do not extend to children and infants. Nor were they design to address nutrition related problems such as diabetes. Given the magnitude of the double burden of non-communicable diseases as well as malnutrition in the region, there is a need to redefine the scope of the current guidelines to address these issues and to ensure these guidelines are in line with current scientific evidence.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  1. Review the use and effectiveness of the Pacific FBDG developed in 2000
  2. Identify ways of improving and enhancing the Pacific FBDG to best address the food and nutrition challenges in the Pacific today.
  3. Revise/develop new guidelines based on the review outcomes.
