The annual Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting will take place in Geneva on 22 May 2016 under the theme, ‘Health Security and access to Universal Health Coverage’. In view of the recent challenges of unexpected disease outbreaks, as well as the increasing impacts from climate change, the meeting will offer health ministers an opportunity for a frank exchange on ways in which Commonwealth countries can effectively address global health security and emergency preparedness, in the context of universal health coverage.
The 2016 meeting will be chaired by Hon Dr Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, Canada and the keynote address will be delivered by Dr Margaret Chan, World Health Organisation Director General. The meeting promises to be very dynamic, as we also welcome the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland to her first Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting as Commonwealth Secretary General.
In advance of the meeting, Hon Dr Jane Philpott has recorded an introductory message. Please find below the video recording:
The Commonwealth health and education unit (HEU) has developed a systems framework for healthy policy seeking to advance global health security and sustainable well-being and deal with the rising cost of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). This provides a flexible policy framework for tools that can be applied to different countries and settings to strengthen health systems, including for assessment, planning, training, evaluation and accreditation. The framework can be found here: Health Systems Framework
The recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, Zika in South America and Cyclone Winston in Fiji have each had significant health and economic impacts threatening global health security. To meet this challenge the HEU has produced a health protection toolkit, which provides a comprehensive and practical resource for policy makers and planners as part of an overall health system. The toolkit can be found here: Health Protection Toolkit
